Perl One-Liners 101-00: Introduction

Perl 5 is my favorite programming language, mostly due to it’s regex integration. One liners are ‘throw away’ command line driven programs that get things done ๐Ÿ™‚ Great for data wrangling, quick file manipulation and sys admin shenanigans! Here is some background info relating to perl:

  • Created in 1987 by Larry Wall.
  • Perl isn’t short form for anything but was later coined the Practical Extraction & Reporting Language.
  • It’s moto is ‘There is more then one way to do it’.

Learning one liners will differ from traditional Perl 5 training courses in the sense we will be skipping lots of concepts. This is due to them not being necessary for me to show you how to get things done ๐Ÿ™‚ We will NOT be covering the following:

  • Shebangs
  • Pragmas
  • Variable Scope
  • Declarations
  • Subroutines

One last thing to note we will be learning the procedural coding style and not OOP.

That’s it for now, we will be learning some perl basics in the next lesson ๐Ÿ™‚

NOTE: This link will contain all the lessons related to One-Liners ๐Ÿ™‚

BONUS: For more, read this article, it illustrates the awesome bits of perl ๐Ÿ™‚
