I liked the first one. I felt the second was mechanically better, but narratively worse. I get they wanted to flesh out Issac more, but it giving him allies and having him talk so much took away from the isolating feeling of the first one.
I also REALLY liked how all the problems in Dead Space 1 were caused by humanity taking apart something they didn’t understand, then putting it back together wrong. Not intentionally mind you, but if you don’t get how it works, how would you know how to reassemble it?
Second game onward re-coned that into space planets made out flesh that devour worlds after finding a marker. I guess that’s why they’re re-booting. Written themselves into a corner.
